Culture and the Changing Demographic

Demographic change is taking place in the North East population, with projections showing expected changes in the total number of people due to both migration and natural change, changes in the proportions of people in different age groups, and changes in composition of households. This phenomenon is often referred to as an ageing population.

With such a dynamic population there are inevitably policy implications - spatial, economic and social.

What this live issue seeks to explore is the assumptions about ageing, consumption and contribution to society that underpin many of the debates. It also aims to investigate how many of the arising issues can be read as both problems to be solved and opportunities to be embraced and consider the role that culture and the cultural sector has to play.
