Culture and New Technology

Technology has a special place in society. It shapes the way we communicate with eachother, how we access information and how we get around. It has the potential to subvert institutional structures while at the same time it fits into our daily lives and established structures.

New technology is simplifying the way that cultural products (like film and music) are created and shared, blurring the boundary between professionals and amateurs. It changes the way they are distributed and shared - problematising the consumption (for profit) of cultural goods. Also, the development of the blogging sites etc. has seen the rise of peer review.

Throughout this process the role of the cultural expert as a gate-keeper is being eroded and the shape of cultural institutions is having to change as forms of access and expertise shift.

This "live issue" seeks to explore the debate and issues around new technology and its democratising role as well as encourage exploration into how the cultural sector can adopt and use new technologies creatively to continue to provide QUALITY cultural provision and make culture relevant to as wide an audience as possible.

The primary question that underlies this debate is "What does a digitally rich region look like and what is the role of culture in that?"
